enlisted in the U.S. Service in l86l in the 8lst N.Y. regiment and
served about three years. He received an honorable discharge and came
to Iowa in l865. Here he made the acquaintance of MISS LUCINDA EDSON
with whom he was united in marriage. To them was born one daughter,
who
grew to a noble womanhood, but died several years ago. Comrade SPENCER
was a charter member of Van Wert Post No. 205, G.A.R. He was post
commander and always held some office in the post.
He was highly esteemed by all with whom he associated. He was honest,
upright and truly loyal; a sound Republican. His religious views were
that of a Universalist. He died of cancer in his stomach, April 23rd.
Funeral services and burial in Van Wert Cemetery were conducted by
Van
Wert Post, G.A.R. A fine delegation from Leon and Weldon Posts were
in
attendance to assist in paying the last tribute of respect to a noble
comrade.
The rose that flourishes in the morn
But little knows its doom.
Our brother taken from our midst
And hastened to the tomb;
Unto that mighty power of death,
It's hard to be resigned;
But Jesus calls and he must go
And leave his friends behind.
