Decatur County Journal
May 9, l90l
Died at her residence in Van Wert April 29, MRS. LUCINDA J. SPENCER,
whose maiden name was TRICKEY, widow of NATHAN SPENCER. The subject of
this sketch was born in Ohio September l5, l820, was united in marriage
to NATHAN SPENCER in Licking County, Ohio on the 5th day of March, l846,
moved to Clarke County, Illinois in l853 where they both united with the
M.E. Church and continued faithful members through life. Sister SPENCER
moved with her family to Iowa and settled in Long Creek Township,
Decatur County, about l855. The writer became acquainted with her in
the winter of '63 and has ever found her to be a true, faithful
Christian.
Six children were born to this union, of whom only three remain: CHARLES
L. of Xenia, Ohio; A.G. of Gunnison, Col., and MRS. MARY HAMPTON of Van
Wert. Sister SPENCER had been living with her son, CHARLES L. in Ohio
since last September, but returned with her son Saturday, was sick when
she arrived, was taken worse on Sunday and died Monday.
Funeral services held by Rev. J. Blair and the writer were attended by a
large company of friends who manifested their regards and esteem by a
most beautiful floral decoration. Sister SPENCER was loved by all who
knew her and was always on the right side of every moral question, a
devoted Christian, a faithful, loving wife and mother. Her end was
peace. Her remains were interred beside those of her husband in the Van
Wert Cemetery.
S. SAMSON.
