LUCINDA E. SPENCER was born in Oneida County, N.Y., June 27, l827. She

was converted and united with the Congregational Church in l869 and was

married to NELSON C. SPENCER in l865. For a number of years she was a

member of the Methodist Church in Van Wert and one of the most loyal

members of the Women's Foreign Missionary Society and a noble supporter

of the Children's Home at Council Bluffs, for whose benefit she bestowed

her last earthly labor on Thanksgiving day. On that night her health

began to show signs of failure continuing until Tuesday, Jan. 3lst, at

about 3 o'clock p.m. when she sweetly fell asleep in Jesus.

Sister SPENCER was a woman whose purpose of life consisted in being

faithful to God. Her manner was quiet and unobtrusive, her aim most

lofty. She will be missed both by all true lovers of the Master and by

the community at large. The writer visited her several times during her

sickness and while she was interested in the means that were being used

for her recovery, and would speak of the prospect of getting better

still she seemed to have an impression that her work was done and would

speak of the life to come in a way that showed that her spirit was

traveling Heavenward. Rev. Vollmer who used to preach in the community,

visited her about an hour before the end came, when he went to her

bedside she said "Its been a long time since I saw you. He said to her,

It is well, and what is the prospect of Heaven? She lifted her hand and

exclaimed "Glory to God in the highest, praise Him forever, all is

well," after which she said, "Pray with us." After prayer he said "Good

Bye, we'll meet in Heaven." She replied, "Yes, We'll Meet in Heaven."

Those who were very near and dear to her both by the ties of nature and

by grace, feel very sensibly the departure of a very dear friend.

Her funeral sermon was preached in the Methodist Church by the Pastors,

Rev. Samson and Vollmer followed with very appropriate addresses after

which her remains were tenderly laid to rest in the Van Wert Cemetery.

Rev. R.J. Tennant.
