Decatur County Journal
December l9, l90l

ELIZA J. SCOTT, daughter of LEVI and EDA SCOTT, was born near Burlinton,
Iowa, February l5, l837, was married to J.F. SHUTTS, July l0, l857, and
died at the home of her son, M.V. SHUTTS, in Weldon, Thankksgiving Day,
November 28, l90l. She was the mother of four children, two sons and
two daughters, WM. and M.V. SHUTTS of Weldon and MRS. W.B. MCCULLOUGH,
of Lucas, Iowa. She moved with her children from Jasper County to
Garden Grove in l876 and five years later came to Weldon, being one of
the first settlers in the town and has made this her home most of the
time since.

She united with the Baptist Church at the age of l5 years but on coming
to Weldon, there being no church of her choice here, she cast her lot
with the Christian Congregation and was a member in good standing of the
Christian Church at the time of her death.

The deceased was a war widow. Her husband in his early manhood, while
yet healthy and strong, gave his life for his country, having
volunteered in the United States service as a member of Co. E 40th Iowa
Regiment in l86l, and died of disease in the hospital at Paducah,
Kentucky, in l862. In speaking of those war days, she relates what a
struggle it was to procure even the necessaries of life for her children
before her pension was granted, but toiled on with patience, hoping for
a brighter day.

She was sick five months and at times suffered intensely but bore it
uncomplainingly, always hopeful of getting up again, but the Lord willed
it otherwise and she has gone to her reward. It can be said of her "She
hath done what she could." Her funeral was held at the Christian Church
Friday afternoon. In the absence of her pastor, C.L. Organ, the Rev.
Matthews of the M.E. Church preached the sermon which was an excellent
one full of good thoughts. Her children, grandchildren and great
grandchildren were all present. The burial was at Green Bay.
