MATHIAS SEUFER was born in the state of Wurtemberg, Germany, in the year
of our Lord, l827, and died at this home in Woodland Township, after an
illness of but a few days, February l2, l902, aged 75 years and sixteen
days. He emigrated from Germany to America in l85l, and lived for a
year and a half in and near New York City, where he worked at his native
calling, that of a gardener and fruit raiser. In l855 he moved to
Pickaway County, Ohio. In l856, he was married to MRS. CATHERINE
HOGAN. Six children were born to them; GEORGE, MARY, LOUIS, LIZZIE,
LOTTIE and CAROLINE, all of whom live, except LOUIS, who was drowned in
l883, at the age of twenty-one years, and eleven months.

He came to Iowa in l864, and settled on the land out of which, by hard
labor, he made the fine farm which was his home. In May, l864 he
entered the service of his country in Co. E. l55th, Ohio Infantry. In
early life as is the custom of the German people, he was confirmed in
the Lutheran Church, with which he claimed a connection till his death.
The funeral services were conducted by Rev. W.H. Ilsley at the home, on
the afternoon of February l3th and the interment was at the Lentz
Cemetery, southwest of Woodland. All children were present at the
funeral except GEORGE and family who had been exposed to the small pox.
