Decatur County Journal

April 4, l90l

WILLIAM JOSEPH SCOFIELD, the subject of this sketch, was born in

Liverpool, England, March 25, l846, and died of pneumonia at his late

home in Weldon, March 2l, l90l, aged almost 55 years. He was the

youngest of six children, three boys and three girls, and came to

America in l86l, where two brothers and one sister had preceded him.

After some time spent in New York he came to Decatur, Ill., to the home

of his sister. From there he came farther west to Missouri, and finally

landed in Iowa in l873.

He was married to DELLA LIGGETT in l878. Seven children were born of

this union, three sons and four daughters, all of whom are left to mourn

with their mother the loss of husband and father. They have lived in

Weldon since l887. MR. SCOFIELD was a quiet, peaceable citizen. Being

a cripple from boyhood and possessing but little of this world's goods,

his trials and hardships were many, but he has fought the last fight and

gained the victory.

His funeral was held at the M.E. Church Friday afternoon, Rev. Mathews

preaching the sermon, after which the body was laid to rest in the Green

Bay Cemetery.
