EMILY JANE NORRIS was born in Pendleton County, Kentucky, Dec. 7, l835, and died at the family residence in Grand River, Iowa, July 19, l904, aged 68 years, 7 months and 12 days.
At the age of 8 years she went with the family to Stark County, Ill., and in l852 they came to Clarke County, Iowa. Here she was united in marriage to SAMUEL PALMER, Nov. 22, l855, who survives her. To this union were born nine children, HARRIET, MARTHA, MELVIN, LEROY, WILLIAM, GEORGE, SAMUEL, VOLNEY and CHARLES. Three of this number, MARTHA, LEROY and VOLNEY, preceded their mother to the bright celestial shore.
Sister PALMER was converted during a meeting held at the Camden Baptist Church by the Rev. F. Edwards, of Osceola, in February, l868, and was baptized with her husband during this meeting. She was a faithful, true, consistent Christian, for by their fruits we are to know them. She exemplified her faith in her life especially by her patience in her long severe illness, which was borne without murmuring, but the end came and she is at rest. By a request made some time before her death, the funeral sermon was preached at the Gregg Chapel by her old Pastor, Rev. Edwards of Osceola, and was largely attended, showing evidently the estimate her friends and neighbors had of her life. She is gone but will not be forgotten. The bereaved family have the sympathy of a large circle of friends.
Asleep in Jesus, blessed sleep,
From which no one ever wakes to weep,
A calm and undisturbed repose,
Unbroken by the last of foes.
