Decatur County Journal
November 5, l903
One's age, position or state in life is no proof against the visitation
of death. The old and familiar saying "that the aged must die and young
may die" finds a powerful illustration in the present instance.
NOLA GROVES PULLEN, youngest daughter of LEWIS and SARAH PULLEN, was
born in Rock Island, Ill., January 25, l887, and died in Leon, Iowa,
Nov. 2, l903, being l5 years, 9 months and 7 days old. When she was 7
years old her parents moved to Leon where they have since resided,
consequently all her schooling was obtained in the Leon School. Two
years more would have sufficed for her to have finished the high school
course. One of her most cherished ambitions was to accomplish this
task.
NOLA was always gentle, modest and kind and was therefore highly
esteemed and loved by all who knew her. From her earliest years she has
been religiously inclined. These convictions and inclinations were
expressed in her public espousal of Christ in His service less than a
year since. On the l9th of last July she was baptized and received into
the church in full membership. Since two years of age, her health has
been infirm, hence, all her life she has suffered in body more or less.
Her final suffering was of brief duration, yet her sufferings were
intense, but in the midst of it all she made a brave effort for life and
manifested a high degree of patience and fortitude. Loving hands and
hearts have performed every service within human power, but God has seen
best to call her to the Heavenly sphere where, under such condition as
His could never be offered, her character will reach its highest
perfection and development. Until the last she maintained consciousness
and the last words which escaped her lips were mother, father and Jesus,
and which represented to her the most precious things of life.
The funeral services were conducted in the M.E. Church on Tuesday,
November 3rd, by the Pastor, Rev. I.N. Woodward, assisted by H.H.
Hubbell and Rev. Charles Reeder. The church was beautifully and
tastefully decorated by the members of the High School. The remains
were laid to rest in the Leon Cemetery.
