Subject: OBITUARY - MARY C. (BARNTHOUSE) PRESTON.

Date: Friday, June 29, 2001 10:49 PM

Decatur County Journal

July 5, l900

MARY C. BARNTHOUSE was born in Marion County, Ohio, May 3, l844. She

was married to JAMES PRESTON, June l3, l86l. In l875 she moved with her

family to Piatt County, Ill., near the town of Monticello, where they

made their home until l892, when they removed to the present home of the

family in Iowa.

At some time subsequent to her marriage, she and her husband, who had

formerly been a member of the Presbyterian Church, united with the

Christian, in that branch which was known as the New Lights, of which

church she remained a member until the removal of the family to this

state. During the years which followed, she still sought to live a

Christian life, and during the late months of her suffering her faith in

her Divine Master was strong and her willingness to endure as He should

think best was unshaken. Her great regret was that she had not united

with the church since coming here. She often said, during her last

illness, that if God spared her life, and she recovered, her first

purpose would be to publicly confess her faith and unite with God's

people in the church.

Her last illness began about Christmas time of the last year, but during

the past four months her suffering has been very great, though patiently

borne. She was the mother of four children, all of whom, with their

bereaved father, survive her and were all present in the home at the

time of her death, which occurred at 5:30 o'clock on Saturday, June

30th. The children are MRS. C.D. HARRISON, of Locke, Montana; ELLA,

CHARLES and PEARL, of Crown.

Funeral services were conducted at the home by Rev. W.H. Ilsley, Pastor

of the Leon Presbyterian Church, assisted by Rev. Flora, on Monday

afternoon, commencing at 2 o'clock. A large crowd followed the remains

to Leon Cemetery where interment occurred.

She has but passed

Beyond the mist that blinds us here,

Into the new and longer life

Of that serener sphere.
