Decatur County Journal

April 26, l900

On last Thursday, F.R. PORTER, of Van Wert, received a telegram

announcing the death of his father at his home in Los Angeles, Cal., on

the morning of April l9th, l900. He had been in failing health for some

time so that his death was not wholly unexpected.

ELDER PORTER was born in l826 and was reared to manhood in eastern Ohio.

He married MISS MATILDA CATHERINE GARDNER in Carroll County, Ohio, about

l85l. To this union were born ten children, all living in the far west

except the oldest, F.R. PORTER, who resides in Van Wert. ELDER PORTER

first located in Clayten County in October, l853, but came to Decatur

County the following spring. He afterwards lived two or three years in

Missouri and then returned to this county. In l882 on account of failing

health, he went to California where he has since resided, coming back to

Leon to visit in l886 and in l89l.

He was a minister in the Church of Christ and organized the first

society in Leon on the first Sunday in June, l854, with about 25

members. He served as pastor of the church for fifteen years.

The popularity of ELDER PORTER is attested by the fact that he was twice

elected to official positions in this county. In the fall of l863 the

Republicans carried the county for the first time. J.C. PORTER was

elected county treasurer, John R. Andrews, representative and Ira B.

Ryan, Sheriff. In l879 MR. PORTER was elected representative and served

for two years. He was always held in the highest esteem by the people.

He leaves many relatives and friends in our county who will deeply

deplore his death.
