was married to MARY E. LEE December l, l858. To them were born three
sons, who still survive. Bro. PATTERSON was raised a Presbyterian and
was quite exemplary but never fully gave his heart to Christ until the
Sabbath before he died, at which time Rev. E.B. Heaton, Methodist Pastor
of Van Wert being present. Bro. PATTERSON made confession of faith in
Christ and asked to be received into the church and be baptized. His
requests were complied with. The writer called on him two days later.
He expressed his faith in Jesus and a hope of Heaven.
He died Wednesday at 3:30 p.m., April ll, in peace. Funeral services by
the writer, assisted by Revs. J. Blair and E. Tillotson in the M.E.
Church of Van Wert, which was packed to overflowing with sympathizing
friends, representatives of the various orders to which he belonged
being present from Leon, Decatur, Grand River and Weldon. He was buried
according to the beautiful ritual of the Masonic order.
Bro. PATTERSON was a soldier in the civil war; was a comrade in the 52nd
Indiana and served nearly three years. He came to Iowa and settled in
Warren County about l870 and moved to Decatur and settled in Franklin
Township in l892, where he resided until death. His wife died March l0,
l887. He was married to MAGGIE J. RICHARDS, November ll, l89l. Bro
PATTERSON was a member of the Masonic, I.O.O.F., K. of P. and G.A.R. at
Milo in Warren County and afterward moved his membership of Masons to
Weldon. He was a member of the encampment at Leon. Bro. PATTERSON was
well known to the writer. He was a good neighbor, kind husband and
father, and was highly respected by all who knew him. I do believe he
was most blessedly saved in Heaven.
