The Davis City Advance, Davis City, Iowa
Thursday, August 3, l899
At the residence of MR. and MRS. FRANK ORDWAY, two miles west of town, on July l3th there occurred the death of their little granddaughter, LEAH, child of MR. and MRS. MORTON ORDWAY, aged l year, l month and 22 days. The mother is the daughter of T.T. STEPHENS and wife of Davis City. The illness was of brief duration and the unexpected blow a severe one to these young parents, this child being their only one.
Funeral services were held at the place of death on the l4th; the sermon being preached by Elder H. A. Stebbins of Lamoni. There was a very large gathering of sympathizing friends and neighbors, and a long procession came with the mourners to the Davis City Cemetery, where the infant form was laid at rest.
While the present is said, yet the eye of faith, and of hope in God looks forward to the glorious reuniting when the good and pure in heart shall be made glad together again. And the blessed Savior said of the little ones, "Of such is the kingdom of Heaven," and there this little one now dwells with the dear sweet ones, of whom the same One said, "In Heaven their angels do always behold the face of my Father who is in heaven."
Go to thy rest, fair child!
Go to thy dreamless bed,
While yet so gentle, undefiled
With blessings on thy head.
Here sin has seared the breast,
Or sorrow woke the tear,
Rise to thy throne of changeless rest,
In yon delightful sphere.
Because thy smile was fair,
Thy lip and eye so bright,
Because thy loving cradle care
Was such a fond delight.
Shall love, with weak embrace,
Thy upward wing detain?
No! gentle infant, seek thy place
Amid the cherub train.
