The subject of this sketch was born in Lincoln County, England, July 3l,
l824, and died at his home in Lamoni, April 25, l90l, aged 76 years, 9
months and 24 days. He was afflicted with paralysis for fourteen months
preceding his death. June 27, l846, the deceased was married to
SUSANNAH FOREMAN, in England, and to this union seven children were
born, of whom the following survive: MRS. J.N. DRAKE, of Hartford,
Mich.; MRS. MARY WILLIAMS, St. Joe, Mo.; ED MCHARNESS, of Leon; MISS
LAVINIA MCHARNESS, of Lamoni; and MRS. W.O. WILEY, of Bloomington
Township.
Father MCHARNESS came to New York in l856 and was joined by his family a
year later. In the fall of l86l the family moved to Van Buren County,
Mich., where they lived for seventeen years and then located in Fayette
Township of this county. MR. MCHARNESS was a stone mason by trade. He
conducted a store for about five years in Lamoni. He was a man of
ability and strict integrity and filled a number of offices in a very
creditable manner. He served as councilman of Lamoni and was its second
mayor.
In l849 deceased joined the L.D.S. Church and twenty years later, became
identified with the reorganized church. The funeral services were
conducted by J.D. Bennett, assisted by President Smith and A.H. Smith.
Interment occurred in Sweet Home Cemetery, three miles southwest of
Lamoni, where repose the remains of two daughters.
