Decatur County Journal

May 20, l897

JOSEPH MCCULLOUGH died in Leon at 7 o'clock Saturday morning, after an

illness of several months. The deceased owned and resided on a farm

near Garden Grove. Last fall he became afflicted with catarrh of the

stomach, which gradually undermined an otherwise vigourous constitution.

A few weeks ago he came here with his wife and children, taking rooms

with MRS. WHITAKOR, near the opera hall, hoping Leon physicians might be

able to benefit his health. This, however, proved impossible.

JOSEPH MCCULLOUGH was born in Marion County, Mo., in October, l865.

When five years of age he came with his parents to this county and has

since resided here. Ten years ago he was married to his cousin, JANE

MCCULLOUGH, daughter of MR. and MRS. ANDREW MCCULLOUGH. To them were

born five children, three of whom survive--the oldest seven years of

age. The youngest became one year old the day its father died.

The remains were interred in the McAllaster Cemetery, 2 l/2 miles

southwest of Garden Grove, in which the dead man's father, ISAAC

MCCULLOUGH, who died three years ago, lies buried, last Sunday afternoon

at 2 o'clock. ELDER KOB conducted a short service at the cemetery.
