Subject: OBITUARY - MRS. EMALINE MCALLISTER.

Decatur County Journal
March 3, l892
The Garden Grove Express of last week contains an obituary of one of the
oldest settlers. MRS. EMALINE MCALLISTER, wife of WM. MCALLISTER, who
died at their home in Colwich, Sedgwick County, Kansas, February 9,
l892.
Deceased was born in Virginia in l8l5, and removed to Garden Grove, Iowa
with her husband and four children in the autumn of l852. MR.
MCALLISTER had previously entered some land two and one-half miles
southwest of the Grove, said to be the first in High Point Township.
They lived with the family of ENOS DAVIS about two months. Made a
temporary shelter on Jonathan Creek and as severe winter weather came
early, they had great difficulty in getting back and forth and sometimes
were obliged to stop work altogether. Finally a cabin was erected and
occupied until a better building took its place.
They removed to Kansas in l873. For the last five years they have lived
in town. The bereaved husband has gone to live with his son, HOMER, and
his wife on the farm. This is one of the many families who know the
hardships of a pioneer life and realized, though late, its advantages.
