Decatur County Journal
February 2, l899
The sudden death of ALONZO MARBLE, which occurred Friday, January 27,
l899 was a severe shock to the community in which he resided.
MR. MARBLE and SAM SHIRLEY were engaged in chopping wood in the timber
one quarter of a mile northwest of the former's home during the day,
Friday. Between the hours of 2 and 3 o'clock in the afternoon, MR.
SHIRLEY was startled with a cry from his companion and looked up just in
time to see him fall to the ground. He at once ran to the prostrate
form, but found that life had fled. MR. SHIRLEY at once called
assistance and the dead man was taken to his home.
Funeral services were held at the L.D.S. Church in Davis City, Sunday
afternoon at 2 o'clock, and the remains were interred in the Davis City
Cemetery.
ALONZO MARBLE was born in Wisconsin, March 6, l862, and resided there
with his father until l865, when he moved with his father to Decatur
County. On March 6, l879, he was married to MISS ALICE MCCORD, and
since that time has lived on his farm, east of Davis City, except one
year spent in Lamoni, and one year in Davis City.
The deceased leaves a widow and four children, a mother, three brothers,
a sister, and a host of friends to mourn his loss.
