At l o'clock on the morning of July 5th, Uncle SAMUEL MILLER, one of the oldest and most highly respected citizens of Leon crossed the dark river and his spirit took its abode with the Heavenly Father.

The deceased was a familiar figure to all the residents of Leon, Iowa and respected by all. He had been in feeble health for some time and on July 4th had made three trips up town to witness the celebration and it is thought the extra exertion brought on the fatal attack of paralysis which caused his death. He was stricken about 7 o'clock in the evening while standing in a crowd watching the wrestling match in front of Bowsher & Biddison's store, and fell to the ground. Kind hands carried him to the residence of L. Van Werden and Dr. Layton attended him, and he seemed to be recovering from the attack, being able later in the evening to be taken home in a carriage. The first attack was followed by another and he had not the strength to withstand it and passed away peacefully surrounded by relatives and friends at l o'clock that night.

The deceased was born in the State of Indiana in l826, being a little past 78 years of age at the time of his death. In his early youth he removed to Knox County, Illinois, and when the war broke out he enlisted and served as a member of Co. H, 83d Illinois infantry. He was married to MISS SALLIE PRICE, in Knox County, Illinois, who died July 8, l892, leaving three sons, R.A. MILLER, who resides in Nebraska; J.F. MILLER, of Merna, Wyoming; and E.E. MILLER, of Lorimer, Iowa. In l866 MR. MILLER came to Decatur County, and for some years lived on a farm near Van Wert. He afterwards moved to Decatur City, where he lived a few years, and came to Leon in l892. He was married the second time to MRS. CATHARINE WHITE in this city on Jan. l7, l894, who survives him.

The funeral services were held from the Christian Church, of which he had been a consistent member for many years, on Wednesday afternoon at 3:30 o'clock, the services being conducted by Rev. R.R. Hopton, of Pella, Iowa, in the absence of his Pastor, Elder H.H. Hubbell, who was in Kansas, the interment being in the Leon Cemetery.

A good man has gone to his reward, one who never made an enemy and was loved and respected by all who knew him.
