Obituary ~ Iowa Fern “Pansy” (McCullough) Jones

Iowa Fern Jones, age 98, was born to Andrew Jackson “Jay” and Etta Mae (Burnett) McCullough on August 10, 1919, near Garden Grove, Decatur County, Iowa. Iowa died on June 10, 2018, at the Westview Acres Care Center in Leon, Iowa. Her burial is at Bethel Baptist Cemetery next to her husband, Jim, and her son John.

Iowa had eight brothers and sisters, seven of whom preceded her in death, Mae Trotz, Hinton McCullough, Ruth Reynolds, Hazel Myers, Fred McCullough, Earl McCullough and Junior McCullough. One sister, Lorene Stryker resides in Tangent, Oregon. Her parents, Jay McCullough and Etta Mae Scott, also preceded her in death.

She was united in marriage to James Harvey Jones, the son of Fred and Sadie Stephens Jones, on December 12, 1936, in Decatur County, Iowa. She had six children, Jimmie Jones and wife Jane, the late John Jones, Janet Jelsma and husband Keith, Jerry Jones and wife Lois, Justin “Mike” Jones and wife Marietta and Judy Jones of Mabelvale, Arkansas.

Iowa enjoyed sewing quilts. She made each of her children and grandchildren a quilt. She liked being outdoors in the summer taking care of her flowers and going on long walks. She lived on a farm for 70 years of her married life.

During the years beside raising her family, she worked as a waitress in various restaurants, was a cook for the Leon School District for many years and worked at O’Bryan Brothers for over 30 years until her retirement.

Iowa’s family came to Decatur County, Iowa from Hasting, Oklahoma in 1918. She was named Iowa Fern because she was the first child born in Iowa. Her father-in-law, Fred Jones, gave her the nickname of Pansy.

Iowa had six grandchildren, Scott Jelsma, Julie Boyce, Tommy Jones, Danny Jones, Joshua Jones and Jeromey Jones, and 12 great grandchildren, Ashley Walker, Trevor Boyce, Alex Boyce, Morgan Jones, Devon Jones, Camryn Jones, Austin Blades, Jessica Jones, Julia Jones, Aiden Jones, Micah Jones and Nolan Jones.
