Obituary ~ Billy Richard Jones
April 21, 1928 ~ December 25, 2013

Billy Richard Jones, age 85 of Lamoni, Iowa, formerly of Leon, Iowa, was born on April 21, 1928, the youngest child of Fred and Sadie Bevel (Stephens) Jones. He left his children and grandchildren at 8:30 a.m. Wednesday, December 25, 2013 at the Decatur County Hospital in Leon, to be with his loving wife who passed away on June 12, 2005.

Billy and Hazel Marcine Green, whom he lovingly called Mabel, were married October 13, 1948 in Leon. They lived their entire life in Leon and were blessed with seven children, Bill, Tom, Jim, Patricia, Kenny, Carolyn, and Patrick. Billy was a loving father and grandfather. He taught all of his children three rules to live by, work hard and you will get ahead, protect your good name and reputation and always tell the truth. He coached little league teams for several years, win or lose, he always took the whole team over to the snack shack for a treat. Later on in life he played on the slow pitch Crestline team. Baseball and hunting were in his blood. He enjoyed gardening and had a strawberry patch that all the grandkids and neighborhood kids flocked to. He was always there to lend an ear or a hand to anyone who needed it. He also enjoyed reading western novels. In later years, he took loving care of Mabel before her death.

Billy farmed and also worked at Stewart's Furniture Store, City of Leon, and Crestline Window Factory. He retired in 1995. Due to failing health, Billy moved in with his son Kenny and wife Connie in May of 2007.

Preceding him in death were his parents; wife Marcine; infant daughter Patty; son Jim; and brothers, George, Tommy, Freddie, Jim, and three-year old Johnie Wailes Jones; and sisters, Dorothy Hubbard and Opal Norris. Survivors include his children, Bill and Carol Jones of Lamoni, Tom and Betty Jones of Bogo on Cebu, the Phillipines, Kenny and Connie Jones of Lamoni, Carolyn Hulett and Rick Pinegar of Leon, and Patrick Jones of Cedar Rapids, Iowa; nine grandchildren; three step grandchildren; 11 great grandchildren; four step great grandchildren; sister-in-law Iowa “Pansy” Jones of Leon; nieces and nephews; and other relatives and friends.

Funeral services will be held at the Slade – O'Donnell Funeral Home in Leon, Iowa at 10 a.m. Monday, December 30, 2013 with Rev. Max Carmichael officiating. Visitation begins Sunday at 1 p.m.with Family receiving friends 2-4 p.m. Burial is in the Leon Cemetery, Leon, Iowa.
