Mount Ayr Record News
Mount Ayr, Ringgold Co., IA
Horace Andrew JOHNSTON, son of Thomas T. and Elizabeth A. (HESS) JOHNSTON, was born on a farm near Ellston, Iowa, on August 13, 1887, and died at the Ringgold County Hospital in Mount Ayr, Iowa, on June 17, 1979, at the age of 91 years, 10 months and five days. At the time of his death, he was a member of the United Methodist Church in Mount Ayr, the Odd Fellow Lodge, Masonic Lodge, Commandery and Shrine.
On November 11, 1911, he was united in marriage to Martha Jane YOUNG in the farm home of the bride’s parents near Grand River, Iowa, and they were privileged to celebrate their 67th wedding anniversary last November. To this union six children were born, four of whom survive. [A son and daughter died in infancy with interment at Young Cemetery near Grand River, Decatur County, Iowa.]
H. A., as he was more commonly called, started in the automobile business in 1916 in Grand River, Iowa, and continued in Diagonal, Newton, Grinnell, and Mount Ayr until his retirement in 1962. He outlived his own generation but is remembered and shall be recalled as a prominent business figure in the community, respected for his integrity and concernment for his fellow man.
Since November, 1977, H. A. and Martha have been residents of the Clearview Nursing Home in Mount Ayr where they received loving care by the staff and frequent visits of their relatives and friends. Horace’s main concern was for the well being of his devoted wife and was ever patiently attentive to her needs. [Aunt Martha suffered from Parkinson’s disease. – SRB]
Preceding him in death were his parents; his twin brother Herbert JOHNSTON; a sister, Alice M. REDMAN; and an infant son and daughter.
He is survived by his wife Martha J. JOHNSTON; four sons: Robert L. JOHNSTON of Mesa, Arizona; Richard Y. JOHNSTON of Colorado Springs, Colorado; Thomas T. JOHNSTON of Fort Madison, Iowa; William E. JOHNSTON of Bedford, Iowa, and their wives. Also surviving are six grandchildren; 8 great-grandchildren, and one great-great-granddaughter.
Fondly remembering trips taken together
Traveling here and traveling there
So confident of her safety
No need for worry or fear.
God will be Martha’s chauffeur
Though days will be lonely and long
And as she so sweetly murmured
“Now my driver is gone.”
