Leon Journal-Reporter
Leon, Decatur County, Iowa

Crystal Marie Johnston, age 89, of Lamoni, Iowa, the daughter of William Wesley and Liccie (Tedrow) Leeper, was born August 26, 1927, in Lamoni, Iowa. She died at Lamoni Specialty Care in Lamoni, Iowa on Wednesday, September 21, 2016.

Marie, as she was known, grew up in the Lamoni area on Leeper Corner. She attended country school and graduated from Lamoni High School in 1944. She did some work as a nanny in Des Moines and also in the Lamoni Creamery before her marriage to Marvin Albert Johnston on December 24, 1947, in Bethany, Missouri. The couple was blessed with two daughters, Judy and Connie.

In her free time, Marie enjoyed embroidering pillowcases and collecting owls. Due to failing health, Marie moved into the Lamoni Manor in 1984. She enjoyed visits from her grandchildren, who all called her Grams. She also enjoyed working Find A Word puzzles, playing Bingo, and collecting Elvis Presley memorabilia, key chains, earrings, and stuffed dolls. She was baptized into the RLDS Church, now the Community of Christ, on December 23, 1990.

Preceding her in death were her parents; daughter, Connie McClure in 2009; great, great granddaughter, Rhykin Hall; and all her siblings, Cleora Tilford, Marvin Leeper, Wallace Leeper, Cloyd Leeper, Harley Leeper, Lena Hacker, and Russel Leeper.

Survivors include her daughter, Judy Hall of Greenfield, Iowa; grandchildren, Kimberly & Scott Landrum of Liberty, Missouri, Jerry & Jennifer Hall of Van Wert, Iowa, and Brian & Lindsey Hall of Fontanelle, Iowa; great grandchildren, Keylee Hall, Austin Hall, Ashlee Hall, Chelsea Sheeder, Hailey Hall, Dakota Hall, and McKenzie Hall; son-in-law, Mark McClure; numerous nieces and nephews; and other relatives and friends.

Funeral services will be held at the Lamoni Community of Christ Church at 10 a.m. Saturday, September 24, 2016, with Elder Les Gardner officiating. Burial will be in the Rose Hill Cemetery, Lamoni, Iowa. Arrangements were through the Slade – O’Donnell Funeral Home of Leon and Lamoni, Iowa.

Memorials may be given to the Alzheimer’s Walk in Marie’s memory, a charity she promoted for years.
