Obituary ~ Phyllis Ivene (Foland) Johnson
June 17, 1912 ~ December 18, 2006
Phyllis Ivene JOHNSON, daughter of Luster and Nettie Margaret (BURCHETT) FOLAND, was born June 17, 1912, on a farm northeast of Grand River in Richland Township, Decatur County, and died Dec. 18, 2006, at the Afton Care Center in Afton [Union County, Iowa]. She was 94.
She attended schools in Decatur County and graduated from eighth grade at District No. 8 in Long Creek Township. Later she moved to Chicago., Ill., area and worked in housekeeping for families. She moved back to Des Moines and attended Thompsonís Rudemar School of Beauty Culture and was a graduate from the school in May 1940. She returned to Osceola and worked in a beauty shop for 10 years during World War II.
She married Frank JOHNSON on Jan. 5, 1951, at the Methodist Church parsonage in Indianola. They farmed west of Osceola, and she enjoyed gardening, raising chickens, flower, with a special green thumb for African violets, sewing and crocheting. She enjoyed listening to the operatic voice of her great-niece, Nicolle FOLAND.
Mrs. JOHNSON accepted Jesus Christ as her personal Savior. She was baptized on Oct. 22, 1967, in Chariton. She was a dedicated and active member of Calvary Bible Church in Osceola. After Mr. Johnsonís death, she moved to the Afton Care Center in Afton in 1999.
Mrs. JOHNSON was preceded in death by her parents; husband Frank on Sept. 6, 1992; brother, Arben FOLAND; sister, Ruth TUCKER; brothers-in-law, Elmer TUCKER, Pearl BOWLSBY and George INGRAHAM.
She is survived by her sisters, Ica INGRAHAM of Sacramento, Calif., and Ava BOWLSBY of Osceola; five nieces and nephews, Lendell FOLAND and wife, Fran of Geneva; Dwayne FOLAND and wife Cathy of Des Moines; Patsy McWHIRTER and husband Mike of Edwards, Ill.; Terry TUCKER and wife Sue of Peoria, ILL.; Keith BOWLSBLY and wife Dorothy of Osceola; several great-nieces and nephews and great-great nieces and nephews; other relatives and a host of friends.
Funeral services for Ivene JOHNSON were Dec. 21, 2006, at Kale Funeral Homes, with Pastor Rick ROBINSON and Pastor George NEAL officiating. Organist was Pennie GONSETH. Vocalist Joyce NEAL sang Meet Me There and the congregation sang My Savior First of All. Casket bearers were Lendell FOLAND, Dwayne FOLAND, Terry TUCKER, Mike McWHIRTER, Keith BOWLSBY and Rick HART. Interment was in Maple Hill Cemetery in Osceola. Arrangements were by Kale Funeral Homes of Osceola and Truro. Memorials may be directed to Calvary Bible Church or Afton Care Center.
