She was born October 2, 1942, at Grand River, Iowa to Auris Lee and Cleo Mae (Payton) Hewlett.

Carol grew up on the farm with three brothers. She loved the outdoors and spent her younger years following her dad around helping him care for the animals. She so enjoyed the little baby calves every spring, her chickens, and having two large gardens every year. She graduated from Grand River High School in 1961. Carol and Gary helped their kids with 4-H and County and State Fairs showing their animals. All three of their children won showmanship with their hogs.

Carol loved and enjoyed her grandchildren and great grandchildren very much. She went to as many ballgames and activities as she could over the years to cheer them on. She also enjoyed watching westerns and the Food Channel on television and reading Laura Ingalls Wilder books.
