Obituary ~ Dennis LeRoy "Denny" Jensen

Dennis LeRoy Jensen, the fourth child of Axel Marius and Viva Mae (Allen) Jensen, was born on November 9, 1931, on a farm near Kellerton, Iowa. He died at Mercy Hospital Medical Center in Des Moines, Iowa on Wednesday, July 8, 2015.

Denny attended country school in a one-room schoolhouse near Decatur, Iowa where his parents had purchased a farm. He attended high school at Leon, Iowa and graduated in 1951. He worked for a short time in the Oskaloosa, Iowa area testing milk as well as part farm jobs. He joined the United States Army in 1951 and was honorably discharged in 1954, having served most of his service time in Germany. His furloughs allowed him to visit his Danish relatives in Aalborg, Denmark.

In July of 1954, he met his wife, Margaret Lee Marshall. Upon her high school graduation, they were married on June 16, 1957. They had just celebrated their 58th wedding anniversary.

Dennis was a skilled carpenter and enjoyed making cabinets, furniture, and etc. He built their cabin at Lake Marie near Mercer, Missouri, which together they enjoyed for 51 years. He was a neighborhood handyman and mostly worked free of charge. He loved to help his wife cook and decorate cakes as well as make candy. He loved going out to eat and enjoyed visiting with his close friends.

He was a part time auctioneer in addition to his 33 years on the job at Paxton Lumber in Des Moines. He was a member of the Simpson United Methodist Church in Des Moines. He had journey to the Holy Land and was greatly moved by that trip. He was also a member of the Home Lodge Masonic Lodge, as well as Za Ga Zig Shrine.

He is survived by his wife, Margaret Jensen of Des Moines, many nieces and nephews, as well as the companions of his siblings, who are all deceased now. Those preceding him in death were his sisters, Leora DeVore and Mary Lou Freeman, and brothers, Bill, Dean, and John Jensen.

Funeral services will be held at the Slade - O'Donnell Funeral Home in Leon, Iowa at 2 p.m. Tuesday, July 14, 2015, with Pastor John Dodds officiating. Burial will be in the Rose Hill Cemetery, Lamoni, Iowa.
