Decatur County Journal
April l2, l894
MISS NELLIE VARGA is in receipt of a letter from LAURA ROBBERTS,
daughter of JOHN D. ROBBERTS, announcing the death of her grandfather,
DR. ISAAC F. HILDRETH, at his home in Columbus, Ohio, last Friday
morning.
DR. HILDRETH was born at Bangor, Maine, March 20, l822, and his
ancestors took an active part in the struggle for American independence.
He attended the graded schools of Bangor until his fourteenth year and
then moved with his parents to Granville, Ohio, where he became a pupil
of Dennison University. Then he worked at the cooper's trade five years,
and taught select school at Columbus.
In l848 he commenced the study of medicine and three years later was
graduated from Jefferson Medical College at Philadelphia. He practiced
his profession for several years in Columbus and early in the summer of
l856 settled at Lovilla, Monroe County, Iowa, where he resided for
several years.
In l868 he moved to Leon and engaged in the drug business and the
practice of medicine. DR. HILDRETH was a Republican in politics and
served as member and chairman of the board of supervisors of this
county. In l876 he built the opera house block which stands as a
monument to his energy and public spirit. His wife was MISS LAURA
DEVERAUX, of Granville, Ohio, whom he married in l848 and who survives
him with his daughter, MRS. SADIE ROBBERTS.
About seven years ago, DR. HILDRETH received a stroke of paralysis and
was obliged to retire from active business. Shortly afterwards he
removed with his family to Columbus, where he has since continued to
reside. With all his faults DR. HILDRETH had many excellent qualities
and possessed a kind heart. He was public spirited and full of energy
and enterprise, traits of character so characteristic of the Yankee.
Peace to his ashes.
