Decatur County Journal

July l4, l892

CHARLES C. HARVEY, eldest son of MR. and MRS. J.W. HARVEY, was born in

Leon, Iowa on the l4th day of April, l878.

He entered the Leon School when he was seven years old and continued

therein until he graduated in the High School in l888. He then attended

the Morgan Park Military Academy, where he remained for one year,

standing at the head of his class and winning the scholarship medal

awarded by the institution. In l889 he entered the State University at

Iowa City, and was in the Junior class when he was taken sick in

November, l89l, with some kind of stomach trouble, which finally caused

his death.

About four weeks ago his parents, thinking to better his condition, and

under the advice of his physician took him to Manitou, Colorado, where

he seemed to improve for a time, but his disease took a turn and he

continued to grow worse, until 6 o'clock p.m. of the 5th inst., when he

breathed his last. His parents had his body embalmed and reached home

with it on Friday, at 2:30 p.m.

At the depot a large crowd of relatives and sympathizing friends met

them and escorted them to their home, which had been opened and prepared

by kind friends for their reception, and everything possible was done to

relieve their suffering and distress. The body was examined and found

to be in good condition. The funeral services were held at the house on

Sabbath afternoon and was largely attended by town and country people.

At the University, CHARLIE was first sargeant of his military company,

associate editor of the Vidette Reporter, and a member of Phi Kappa Psi

fraternity. He was highly esteemed by students and faculty, and loved

by his fraternity brothers.
