CHARLES N. HARRELL, son of MR. and MRS. H.D. HARRELL, of Creston,
employed as a brakesman on the K & W, running from Osceola to Des
Moines, was killed at Osceola Saturday afternoon about l o'clock while
engaged in his duties. The distressing accident occurred while he was
standing on the end of a box car in the Osceola yards. An engine struck
the car with such force as to throw young HARRELL to the ground where he
lay stunned and helpless. He was not seen by anyone and before he could
get out of the way, an engine passed over him crushing his legs and
inflicting other injuries. He died about 4:30 o'clock.
The remains were taken to Creston Sunday morning on No. 3. Monday
morning at 7 o'clock the funeral train left Creston with the remains,
accompanied by the relatives and others, arriving in Leon at ll:35. The
body was taken to the Christian Church and at 3 o'clock in the
afternoon, Elder H.H. Hubbell preached the funeral sermon, after which
the remains were laid at rest in the Leon Cemetery. The relatives have
the sympathy of the entire community in their sad bereavement.
CHARLES NELSON HARRELL was born in Allendale, Mo., September l3, l882,
and died at Osceola, March 25, l905, aged 22 years, 6 months and l2
days. He moved with his parents to Leon when seven years old. He
attended the Leon public schools and afterwards learned telegraphing at
the Q depot. He served as telegraph operator at various places and last
September, entered the employ of the K & W as a brakeman. About four
years ago, his parents moved from Leon to Afton and later on to Creston.
Among the relatives present at the funeral were; Mr. and Mrs. H.D.
Harrell and daughters, Merle and Pearl, all of Creston; Archie Harrell,
train dispatcher at Coal City, Ill.; and Willard Harrell, station agent
at Thayer, Iowa; also Grandma Gardner, Orville Israel and sister, and
Mrs. David Donahue, all of Bethany, Mo. Others present were; Fred
Gardner, wife and son, of Blythedale, Mo.; Geo. Craig of Afton; Mrs.
Catherine Currier; Reba Ingram; Miss Ella Keaster; Miss Bessie Snyder;
Miss Daisy Pinkerton; John Walkington; Harry S. Long, all of Creston.
