Decatur County Journal
November 3l, l90l
MELINDA LAY, daughter of JOHN and NANCY LAY, was born in Granger County,
Tenn., May 28, l82l, and died at the home of her daughter, MRS. ELIZA
BURRELL, in Davis City, Iowa, on Nov. 4, l90l, after nine months of
painful suffering. The deceased was married to WM. A. HAMILTON on July
3, l84l, he having passed away nine years ago last June, leaving her
a
widow and the mother of l0 children, 3 sons and 7 daughters; and seven
of those children yet survive the aged mother, who lived to be 80 years,
5 months and 6 days old; when she claled her loved ones to her bedside
and bade them a last good-bye.
She united with the Primitive Baptist Church in l873, living in full
faith up to the time of her death. She was ready and prepared to meet
her Savior and she expressed her willingness by saying with the last
fleeting breath: "Bless the Savior for taking me out of my suffering."
Her favorite songs were: "Nearer my God to Thee", and "Down at the
Cross".
Mother has gone, Oh how we loved her,
Her precious voice is still;
A place is vacant in our home,
Which never can be filled.
Funeral services were held Tuesday, November 5th, after which the
remains were taken to the Hamilton Cemetery north of Pleasanton and
laid
by the side of her husband to await the resurrection.
