"One by one they depart."
Another one of the old settlers of this county has left us. JOHN
M.
GARDNER died at his late residence near Leon at fifteen minutes after
4
o'clock, Saturday morning, August 6, l892, and his remains were followed
by a large number of friends and fellow citizens to the Leon Cemetery,
where they were placed on the evening of the same day in a vault that
had been previously prepared by the side of the vault in which his
departed wife was interred, who died January 4, l89l.
MR. GARDNER was born September l8, l828, in Columbiana County and
afterwards moved to Stark County, Ohio, and was married to MISS HELEN
DAWSON in said county, October l, l854. He moved to Decatur County
May
22, l857. MR. GARDNER was the father of four children, two of
whom
departed this life before the father and mother, leaving two children,
SARAH ALICE and JOHN M. GARDNER, and two grandchildren to mourn their
loss.
MR. GARDNER was a very robust man and had been a very strong, hard
working man for years. His devotion to his family and his grief
because
of the death of his wife was unbounded. A short service was held
at his
late residence by the writer, when the same beautiful hymns were sang
by
the friends and neighbors that were sang at the funeral of his wife,
led
by Brother GRANDSTAFF--numbers 20, 36l and 207 in the Gospel Hymns,
207
being MRS. GARDNER's favorite hymn.
