BAYLIS D. GARDNER died at his home in Van Wert, Iowa, January l3, l893,
after a brief illness of l0 days. He was first stricken down
with lung
fever which terminated in typhoid pneumonia.
He was born in Columbianna County, Ohio, May l, l84l. Came to
Iowa in
l858. He enlisted in the army in l862 and faithfully served his
country
three years. He united with the Church of Christ in l866 at Leon,
Iowa,
and was baptized by REV. O.E. BROWN. Was married to MISS LIZZIE
FIERCE,
October 27, l870. To them was born one daughter, who is now the
wife of
MR. I.N. SKIDMORE.
MR. GARDNER, at the marriage of his daughter, purchased residence
property in Van Wert and turned over the care of the farm to his
son-in-law and moved to town, retiring from the pressing and heavy
cares
of farm life, but was not permitted to long enjoy his new home, as
the
death angel came with his summons, and he bid adieu to all here below
and passed away.
MR. GARDNER was a very active man. He was always busy and looked
upon
indolence as inexcusable in any one. He was a firm advocate of
all the
moral and social reforms and gave his aid and influence to all causes
calculated to elevate and better society and mankind generally.
The funeral services were conducted by the writer at the Christian
Church, January l4th, to a large concourse of weeping and sympathizing
relatives and friends from I Cor. l5:55-57: Oh, Death Where is
Thy
Sting, etc. After the discourse the G.A.R.'s took charge and
paid a
last tribute to the departed comrade at the church, then we repaired
to
the cemetery and laid to rest all that remained of Brother GARDNER.
He leaves to mourn his loss an aged mother, two brothers, two sisters,
a
wife and daughter, who have the sympathy of all in their sad
bereavement. May God sustain them in their hour of trial is our
earnest
prayer.
REV. J.W. SMITH
