Decatur County Journal
April ll, l90l
In Weldon, Friday, March 29, l90l, MRS. MARTHA GRAVES took her departure
from earth to be with Christ in glory. Her death was not a surprise
to
the community as her physicians, friends and even she herself had
expected for several weeks that her time on earth was short. MARTHA
OGLE was born in Roscow, Coshocton County, Ohio, on Nov. l, l839 and
made that her home until 25 years of age when she came to Missouri,
where on August l9, l866 she was united in marriage to GEORGE W. W.
GRAVES. To this union were born eight children, two of whom preceded
the mother to the home beyond. In l868 she, with her family came to
Creston, Ia., and after a residence of four years they came to Decatur
County, Ia., and have since made this their home.
She united with the Christian Church more than thirteen years ago and
was a woman of great faith in God. She had sought the Lord and found
Him an ever present help. As her body grew weaker and eternity nearer
her faith grew stronger and brighter. In her sickness she often spoke
of and longed for death. To her death was a light matter as she looked
beyond to the glorious home Christ had prepared for her in the land
where there is no pain, no sorrow, no death. Those left to mourn her
loss are a brother, husband, two sons and four daughters.
Her children were all at her bedside when death came and had been for
several days previously tenderly ministering to all her needs as far
as
human and loving hands could. She loved her children as ever true
mother does and her last words were, "Where are the children?" and
peacefully closed her eyes in sleep to open them no more on earth.
Asleep in Jesus, blessed sleep
From which none ever wake to weep;
A calm and undisturbed repose
Unbroken by the last of foes.
The funeral was held at the Christian Church, conducted by her pastor,
C.L. Organ. The text from which the sermon was preached was selected
by
herself.
