ELI GRANDSTAFF was born in Knox County, Ohio, on the 3rd day of January,
l82l, and died December 8, l898, at the home of his daughter in
Stanberry, Mo., this being the 56th anniversary of his marriage. He was
the youngest of seven children, all of whom, so far as known, have been
called from earth. His father's name was LEWIS. His mother died when
he was quite young and the children were scattered. He was married to
MARY JANE IMLAY December 8, l842, In Guernsey County, Ohio. To them
were born five children, JAMES, SMITH I., JOSEPH L., and LIBBIE A.
ALLEN, at whose home he died, and under whose special care he has been
for many years, and CHARLES B., who died in infancy.
He united with the M.E. Church in Ohio in l842 and has lived a devoted
Christian life, and gave abundant evidence of his acceptance with the
Savior.
He with his family came to Guthrie County, Iowa, in the spring of l858,
crossing the Des Moines River on a flat boat, there being no bridges on
that River at Ft. Des Moines, now Des Moines. He entered 80 acres of
land in Guthrie County, where STUART now is. Two sons, JAMES and
JOSEPH, served through the war in the 29th Iowa Volunteer Infantry. He
was foreman of the first grand jury impanneled in Guthrie County, was
one of the charter members of the M.E. Church in the county.
In l870, he moved near Pleasanton, Iowa, and about four years ago to
Weldon, Iowa, and about four weeks ago, to Stanberry, Missouri.
