Decatur County Journal
January 28, l897
J.N. and S.A. GATES were called to Smyrna, Clarke County, Sunday on
account of the sudden death of their uncle, JOHN M. GATES. The
deceased
with two brothers, both of whom have preceded him in death, moved to
Iowa in l838, JOHN M. locating near Smyrna.
At the time of his death, MR. GATES was 79 years, 4 months and l7 days
of age. He lost his wife about three years ago, and had since
resided
with his only daughter, MRS. J.M. BAY, on a well stocked farm of 200
acres which he owned. A few hours prior to his death, MR. GATES,
accompanied by his son-in-law, had gone to the neighbors on business.
The distance was only about one-half mile, but MR. GATES seemed very
much exhausted upon his arrival. He sat down, but after a few minutes
conversation, seemed to sink into unconsciousness, and before
restoratives could be administered, expired.
The funeral service occurred Monday. The deceased had been a Mason
since the organization of a lodge of that order at Garden Grove.
