Decatur County Journal

December l0, l896

CATHERINE MAY GATES was born May l, l866, on the paternal estate, 2

miles north of Leon. After completing the course of study in the

country school, she attended the Leon High School. With intent to

prepare herself for teaching she attended the State Normal at Cedar

Falls, and the following year, being in Kansas, she attended an Academic

Institution at Winfield. She taught various schools in the county; for

a time in Leon. She then went to Davenport to take employment in the

Children's Home Finder house but soon was summoned to her brother's home

where children were left without a mother's care. Here she had charge of

the home, at the same time giving valuable aid in the Sunday School and

congregation of the Presbyterian Church of which she became a member in

April, l886.

She was a lovely Christian character, fervent in zeal, full of charity

and good works, spiritually minded. She belonged to the inner circle of

devout ones. She delighted to talk with those of kindred spirit of the

blessed experiences, struggles and triumphs of graces in the heart. She

had her mind set on full consecration to Christ. Though her life was

cut short at 30, she had done already much service and good for mankind.

Compared with many whose days are given to frivolous pleasure in ball

room and worldly amusement she lived a model life. The Master said;

"Come up higher." Her memory is blessed.
