DAVID J. GARRETT was born in Tippecanoe County, Indiana, June 29, l843,
and died at his home in Leon on July 28, l900. His father was Rev.
JAMES L. GARRETT, a Methodist minister who preached in this county
more
than forty years ago. The subject of this sketch came with his parents
to Leon, Iowa, in the year l85l where he resided until his death. He
enlisted in the service of his country March 3, l862, in Co. A, l7th
Iowa Infantry, and was discharged for physical disability, December
l6,
l862. He re-enlisted August 5, l863, in Co. C, 9th Iowa Cavalry, and
was discharged February 28, l866. On returning home from the Army,
MR.
GARRETT was united in marriage to SARAH E. ROACH, November l8, l866.
To
them as parents ten children were born. Seven are living and three
are
dead. The family were all present at his death.
The funeral took place on Sunday at the residence, services being
conducted by Rev. F. Edwards of the Baptist Church. He leaves his wife,
children, one dear sister, MRS. BELLE RYAN, of King City, Mo., with
many
others, to mourn his death. He was a great sufferer.
