UNCLE JIMMIE GARRET died at his home in this city, Saturday, March 5.
He had been in failing health for several years and after the death of
his wife some years ago, he became despondent. UNCLE JIMMIE had many
good qualities and had a host of friends in Leon.
He was born in Kentucky in August, l827, and was in his 7lst year at the
time of his death. He was for many years, a resident of Burlington,
Iowa, and New Boston, Ill. For several years he was engaged in the
mercantile business. He has been a resident of Decatur County since
l863 and during his residence here, accumulated a small property. In
l880 he was elected to the office of county recorder on the democratic
ticket. He was at one time connected with the late A.J. DETRICK in the
publication of the Democrat-Reporter at this place, and was a man of
some prominence in the local politics.
The funeral was held from the house Monday afternoon, conducted by the
REV. G.D. GURLEY, after which the remains were laid to rest in the Leon
Cemetery.
