Decatur County Journal
March 25, l897
Died at her home in Decatur City, Iowa, on Monday, March l5, l897,
RACHEL STELLA GARRETT, aged sixty-seven years, five months and
twenty-two days.
The deceased was born in Belmont County, Ohio, September 22, l829.
She
was the tenth child of JACOB and SARAH YOST. When twelve years of age
she removed with her parents to Monroe County, Ohio, where she resided
until l857, when she, in company with her father and mother came to
Davis County, Iowa, locating near Pulaski. On October 29, l859,
she was
married to W.C. GARRETT; to this union four children--two sons and
two
daughters--CLYDE W., BURGESS W., SARAH A. and EVA A. were born, all
of
whom are still living.
The subject of this sketch was a woman of strong mental endowments,
which she cultivated assiduously. In her young womanhood she
followed
the vocation of school teaching in her native state. She was
a greater
reader and was well posted on the current topics of the day.
In November, l89l, the deceased suffered a stroke of paralysis, which
affected her right side and her nervous system. From this date
up to
the time of her death she was a constant sufferer, finally yielding
to
this disease.
My mother's dear hands; her
beautiful hands!
How they cared for
my infant days;
They guided my feet into
pleasant paths,
And smoothed out the
rugged ways.
My mother's dear hands; her
beautiful hands!
I know I shall clasp
them once more;
When my feet touch the brink
of the Heavenly land,
We shall meet on that
golden shore.
