Subject: OBITUARY - KATE GARRETT.
Date: Thursday, May 17, 2001 6:52 PM
February l8, l897
Died, at the home of her parents, MR. and MRS. DAVE GARRETT, in Leon, at
3:30 o'clock Sunday morning, KATE GARRETT, aged 22 years, 7 months and
2l days.
The deceased was born in Leon, June 23, l874, and lived here until her
death. She attended the Leon schools up to six years ago, when she
entered the employ of the Reporter office as a compositor. She united
with the Baptist Church seven or eight years ago and was baptized by
ELDER NORTHERN.
Her health began to fail three or four months ago and soon it was
apparent that the dread disease, consumption, had begun its ravages on
her system. With an indomitable will, notwithstanding her poor health,
she retained her position in the Reporter office, and only after the
earnest protestations of friends, relinquished it five weeks ago. Since
then she has grown steadily worse although not bedfast. Only last week
she was about town and on Saturday prior to her death, walked to the
home of one of the neighbors. She was taken worse again Saturday
evening at 8 o'clock and died suddenly and unexpectedly at 3:30 the next
morning while sitting in a chair. Heart failure is ascribed as the
immediate cause of her death.
The funeral service was held Monday afternoon at the Baptist Church in
the presence of a large concourse of friends. In the absence of the
pastor, REV. G.M. HUGHES of the Methodist Church had charge of the
service, after which the body was interred in the Leon Cemetery. The
pall bearers were representatives from the different newspaper
offices--B.F. CRAIGO and CLAUDE LOREY from the Reporter; L.S. EVANS,
J.C.V. BOWMAN and ED. H. JENNINGS from the JOURNAL, and F.D. JAMES from
the Review.
The bereaved family, consisting of the parents, two sisters and five
brothers, have the sympathy of the entire community.
