JOHN FLETCHER GUNTER was born in Putnam County, Ind., July l8, l838, died at his home in Leon, Iowa, Saturday, Oct. 29, l904, at the age of 66 years, 3 months and 11 days.
When but a boy the subject of this sketch moved with his parents to Missouri, and a few years later he came to Decatur County to make his home with an elder brother. When the Civil War broke out he enlisted in l86l in Co. A, 3d Iowa Cav., and served one year, being honorably discharged. He rerturned to Decatur County, and in July, l862, was married to MISS NANCY HOWARD, who survives him. Eight children were born to them; ANNA JANE, WILLIAM MARION, LAURA OLEVA, CHARLES CLIFFORD, EDE CORDELIA, GERTIE MAY, CORA MYRTLE and FRANK RICHARD. For many years he resided on a farm in Eden Township, but a few years ago his health failing, he came to Leon and bought property on South Main Street, where he made his home until his death.
He united with the Christian Church of Leon in l870, and for 34 years has lived a Christian life. He was also a loyal member of Leon Post No. 23l, G.A.R.
Funeral services were held at the Christian Church, Sunday afternoon at 2 o'clock, conducted by Elder H.H. Hubbell, interment being in the Leon Cemetery. The G.A.R. Post had charge of the services at the cemetery, and he was laid to his final resting place with military honors.
