E.G. EVANS was born in Chedder, Somersetshire, Old England, August 2l,
l824, and died at his home in Leon, Iowa, on March l2, l906, aged 8l
years, 6 months and 2l days. He passed away after a lingering illness
and was unconscious several days prior to his death.
In l844, he married MISS SARAH HILL to which union eight children were
born, six of whom have preceded the father to the better land. The
surviving children are: JAMES H. EVANS, of Leon, and WALTER W. EVANS, of
Grand River Township, both of whom are among our best citizens. MRS.
EVANS died in Leon, March 22, l902. The deceased was united in marriage
to ELIZABETH MCCUTCHAN in August, l902. He was a consistent and
faithful member of the M.E. Church for nearly half a century.
MR. EVANS came to Skeneaties, N.Y., from England in l848 and afterwards
located in Wisconsin. In l850 he came to Delaware County, Iowa, where
he engaged in farming. He afterwards conducted a furniture and
undertaking establishment in Worthington until burned out in l868, when
he returned to the farm. MR. and MRS. EVANS came from Delaware County
to Leon in l889.
MR. EVANS was a man who was highly esteemed by everybody. He possessed
good judgment and a wide range of information. He was a good man, a
useful citizen and made friends wherever he went.
Funeral exercises were conducted by Rev. A.M. Pilcher at the M.E. Church
on Wednesday afternoon of last week at l:30 o'clock. Dr. Pilcher
delivered an able and appropriate sermon to a large audience who had
assembled despite the stormy weather. The pall bearers were JOHN
HEWLETT, JOHN BRYANT, PETER STREET, J.W. KEELER, W.W. CRAIG and M.A.
GAMMILL. Interment was made in Leon Cemetery.
