Deatur County Journal
March 2l, l889

MR. JAMES M. DALE departed this life March l2, l889, at the home of his
son JOE, at the age of 68 years and 8 months.  Mention had been made
from time to time of his sickness in the columns of your paper, yet the
news of his death was a shock to most of us.

His death was caused by hip and kidney disease, from which he had been
ailing for years.  On the 6th of February, he was taken worse, medical
aid was summoned, but he grew steadily worse until the time of his
death.  Mention has been made of the burning of his home, which no doubt
hastened his death, as he lived but 26 hours from the time he was
removed from the burning building.  He realized the situation when
carried out, but from that time he said nothing understandingly.

Deceased was one of the oldest and most highly esteemed citizens of
Decatur County.  A kind father and loving husband and an obliging
neighbor.  It is not necessary to say his death causes sadness among his
friends and grief in the home circle.  He leaves a wife and eleven
children, all of whom were present at the burial except JAMES H., living
in Nebraska.  His remains were laid to rest in the family burying ground
on Wednesday afternoon.  A large concourse of people were present to
show their esteem for the departed.

MR. DALE was attended by DR. GARDNER throughout his illness, and
received the best of care and attention from relatives and friends, for
which the family wish to extend their thanks.  Deceased was a member of
the Baptist Church.  The funeral will be delivered from the New Salem
pulpit at some convenient date.

MR. DALE was born in Hamilton County, Indiana, July l2, l820.  He was
reared on a farm and received his education in the subscription schools
of pioneer days. He had been married three times.  He was married at the
age of twenty-four, to MISS EVELIE TOWNSEND, of Hamilton County, who
died two years after her marriage.  February 24, l848, MR. DALE was
married to a MISS BARBARA DAVIS, who died March l0, l856, leaving six
children, WM. J., ALBERT C., MARY E., JOHN A., SAM'L A. and JAS. H.
MARY E., deceased.  In l855 he came to Iowa.  Was married to his wife
now living, November 30, l856, her maiden name being EUNICE DUNHAM.
Seven children blessed this union, JOSEPH R., LAURA AREN, BARBARA,
SHERMAN, FLORA E., WILLARD and AMBROSE DUDLEY.  BARBARA, deceased.

MR. DALE, at the time of his death, was the owner of 580 acres of
improved land situated in this township.
