The body of L.L. DELONG, a prominent and wealthy farmer of Clarke County
who died several months ago, under mysterious circumstances and whose
body was exhumed by order of the court, died, say chemists, from
strychnine poisoning. Acting upon evidence taken before him last
Saturday afternoon, Governor Cummins will offer a large reward for
the
arrest and conviction of the murderer, who it is thought was an intimate
associate of the MR. DELONG.
Strychnine mixed with whiskey is supposed to have been the means used
to
secure the death of the unfortunate man. The statement was made that
DELONG died within thirty minutes after drinking the poisoned liquor.
The evidence was submitted to the Governor by a son of the murdered
man,
who called at the State House last week, accompanied by S.R. Macy,
the
Des Moines chemist who made an examination of the stomach, liver and
other vital organs of the deceased. The matter has been kept strictly
quiet and the people of Osceola and Clarke County
have been kept in ignorance of the discovery that death was due to
poisoning administered by murderous hands and not to heart failure,
as
was generally supposed.
Statements made by Sheriff Banker and County Attorney, Scott of Clarke
County, indicate that evidence now in their possession is just about
sure of convicting the party who is held under suspicion by the
authorities. It is said that the man under suspicion, hurried to his
home in the country, arriving there before the death of his victim.
