JOHN DAVIS was born in Highland County, Ohio, Sept. l2, l839 and died Dec. l9, l898 at the age of 59 years, 3 months and 7 days. He came to this county in l856, hence was one of the early settlers. On Oct. 7, l859 he was married to MARIAH JEWETT to which union nine children were born: CORDELIA A., JOHN D., JOSEPH L., NARASSUS A., JAMES O., CLAYTON D., MILLA J., GRACE E. and MARY O. Three of these have preceded the father in death. He enlisted in Co. K, 39th Regiment of Iowa Inf. Vol.; was enrolled on the 22nd day of Aug., l862 and was discharged from service May l9, l865.

He has been summoned to the final roll call and his testimony to the last showed his perfect readiness to enter into the joys of his Lord.

We recognize in his departure the loss of a good citizen, a kind friend, and an upright man. He leaves a companion, three sisters, two brothers, six children, besides a host of friends to mourn his loss. Funeral services were conducted at the Union Church, where a large audience of friends has assembled to pay the last token of respect.
