Obituary ~ Mahala L. (Butts) Cox

Leon, Decatur County, Iowa
Mahala L. Butts, daughter of John and Ellen Funk Butts, was born in Pickaway County, Ohio January 5, 1854 and departed this life April 24, 1926 at the home of her son Lennie being at the time of her death 82 years, three months and 19 days old.
She came to Iowa with her parents when she was ten years old and joined the Bethel Baptist Church in the year of 1871 and has been a faithful member since that time.
She was united in marriage to Stephen L. Cox, March 17, 1876, and to this union was born nine children six of whom preceded her in death namely: Jessie Martin, Almon David, Harley Burton, Lulu E., Grace A., and one infant. The surviving children are: Thomas Alexander, Jacob Frederick, and Stephen Leonard (Lennie.)
The husband died May 13, 1919. Since that time, she has made her home with her children. She has ten grandchildren and eleven great grandchildren; three sisters and one brother: Mary Alice Cox, Margaret Slaughter, Sarah Bullard and Mike Butts besides other relatives and a host of friends. She was a kind and loving mother and will be sadly missed by her loved ones.
Funeral services were held at Bethel Church April 26, 1936 conducted by Rev. Elba Dale and the body was laid to rest in the Bethel Cemetery.
