Obituary

Ruth Marie Cooper, age 95 of Leon, Iowa, youngest daughter of Thomas Alexander and Suffrona Mardella [Latta] Smith, was born May 26, 1913 near Garden Grove, Iowa and died December 6, 2008 at Westview Acres in Leon.

Ruth lived with her family in Cooperton, Oklahoma as a young girl, returned to Iowa at age six. Ruth attended country schools, Daughton near Grand River and Bradley Welcome School south of Leon.

As a young woman, Ruth met August Thomas Cooper at box socials, where they enjoyed the picnic lunches she made for the occasions. August had been tipped off beforehand on which box to bid for. August and Ruth married on February 25, 1929 in Leon. Four children were born to them: June, Deloris Maxine, Barbara Ruth, and August Gene. The family made their home in Leon.

Ruth was a hard-working homemaker. While her husband August served in The U.S. Navy during World War II, Ruth took care of their family, grew a victory garden, raised chickens, and wrote August every day.

Until two years ago, Ruth lived in the same home since 1946. She grew raspberries and gooseberries, from which she made wonderful pies for family members, church dinners, and just anytime for her grandchildren. Her grandchildren affectionately called her "Grandma Pie." Ruth also raised Indian corn and popped huge bowls of popcorn for her children and friends when they were in high school.

Ruth was baptized in Grand River in April 1924. She and August became faithful members of Calvary Baptist Church in Leon, which August helped build. After a lengthy illness in which Ruth cared for him at home, August died on December 22, 1988. They shared nearly 60 years of marriage.

Also preceding Ruth in death were infant daughter June, and Ruth's 8 brothers and sisters.

Ruth was a good mother and grandmother to her family.

She is survived by her children: Deloris Dale and husband John of Slater, Missouri, Barb Smith and husband Reggie of Slat Lake City, Utah, and Gene Cooper and wife Debbie of Leon; 12 grandchildren: August, Forrest, Zachary, Cody, John, Brian, Becky, Jean, Michael, Patrick, Kathlene, and Brenda; a number of great grandchildren; and other relatives and friends.
