Obituary ~ Richard William "Dick" Cook
May 22, 1926 ~ May 5, 2016
Richard William Cook, age 89, of Van Wert, Iowa, the son of James Wavel and Myrtle Irene (Blauer) Cook, was born May 22, 1926, at the family’s rural home outside of Diagonal, Iowa. He died at his Van Wert home on Thursday, May 5, 2016.
Dick, as he was known, grew up and attended country school. He farmed all of his working life and also worked road construction when Interstate 35 was built in Iowa. Over the years, he also worked for Saxton, Inc., and the Leon Sale Barn. He loved to play pitch and bean bag toss. He also loved to fish and deer hunt and in the 70’s and 80’s, he and the family coon hunted.
Dick was united in marriage to Marilyn Jean Hainline on April 17, 1948, at Mount Ayr, Iowa. They started their married life in Afton, Iowa then Grand River, Iowa and to their farm north of Van Wert, Iowa. Dick never retired; he always kept his fingers in the farmwork.
In earlier years, Dick was a member of the Van Wert Volunteer Fire Department and the Van Wert United Methodist Church.
Preceding him in death were his parents; sister, Sadie Judah; brother-in-law, Mike Smith; Marilyn’s parents, Clifford and Dorothy Hainline; her brothers, Terry, Lyndell, Larry, and Chuck; and her sister-in-law, Doris Hainline.
Survivors include his wife, Marilyn Cook of Van Wert, Iowa; children, Richard “Dick”, Jr. and Shirley Cook, Dan and Carol Cook, Diane and Dean Allen, Doug Cook, Debbie and Jim Whistler, Donna and Rod Norman, all of Van Wert, Doris and Gary Loy of Murray, Iowa, Shad Cook and wife, Lesley of Leon, Iowa and Todd Cook of Van Wert; 11 grandchildren; 21 great grandchildren; two great, great grandchildren; sister, Pat Smith of Afton, Iowa; brother, Jim and Donella Cook of Creston, Iowa; Marilyn’s brothers, Garry and Kathi Hainline and Ted and Carolyn Hainline; her sisters-in-law, Avis Hainline and Cherri Hainline; nieces and nephews; and other relatives and friends.
Funeral services will be held at the Slade – O’Donnell Funeral Home in Leon, Iowa at 10:30 a.m. Monday, May 9, 2016, with Pastor Dwayne Hendrichs officiating. Burial will be in the Van Wert Cemetery, Van Wert, Iowa.
