Donald Eugene Christensen, age 86 of Leon, Iowa, passed away peacefully on April 23, 2009 at home surrounded by his loving family.

Don was born September 14, 1922 south of Leon in Decatur County. Don was the son of Charles and Ruth [Durell] Christensen. Don attended rural schools in Decatur County through 8th grade. He left school to help take care of his family during the Depression.

Don married Hazel Mae Rumley on August 15, 1943 in Bethany, Missouri. Their home was blessed with 4 children: Donald Dean, Phyllis Mae, Sharon Kay, and Dennis Dean.

Early in their marriage, Don and Hazel enjoyed living for a short time in Baker, Oregon. Don worked picking cherries and also at a Ford garage.

As a young man, Don began farming in Decatur County. From 1948-1954 he worked for the Decatur County Road Crew. Following that, Don worked for numerous construction companies as a heavy equipment operator before starting his own construction company in 1961, Leon Construction Company. Don did a lot of conservation work and many jobs that can still be seen today. In the late 1960's Don and Hazel owned Aunt Phyl's Restaurant, which was operated by daughter Phyllis.

Don retired from farming and construction in 1989 and spent the next 20 years traveling with his wife Hazel and spending time with family and friends. Don enjoyed the outdoors - birds and his birdhouses, the squirrel feeders, his antique John Deere tractors, hunting, and fishing.

Don and Hazel attended the Calvary Baptist Church in Leon.

He was preceded in death by his parents; daughter Sharon Tyler; great grandson Chase Eugene Barber; brother Paul Christensen; and sisters Wilma Gumm and Maxine McDaniel.

Surviving are his wife of over 65 years, Hazel Christensen of Leon; children: Don Christensen and wife Marcia of St. Joseph, Missouri, Phyllis Williams and husband Herman of Decatur, Iowa and Dennis Christensen and wife Kathy of Leon; his grandchildren and great grandchildren; sister Mildred Walters and husband Wayne of Des Moines, Iowa; brother Richard Christensen and wife Margaret of Carlisle, Iowa; sister-in-law Roberta Christensen of Osceola, Iowa; nieces and nephews; and other relatives and friends.
