Nathaniel "Ray" Carmichael, son of Nathaniel and Netty May (Appleton) Carmichael, was born in Oakland, California, on Decmeber 19, 1892. He was baptized on February 17, 1901. Ray attended Graceland College and obtained his B.S. degree at Iowa State University and took his graduate studies at Iowa State and the University of Edinburg, Scotland.

He married Lula Grace Porter August 11, 1925.

Ray was ordained a priest on February 12, 1922; a high priest on February 7, 1926; and a bishop on May 8, 1932. He served on Graceland College's Board of Trustees from 1934 to 1937; was a member of presiding bishopirc from April 8, 1934 to 1990; and was superannuated on April 1, 1968.

Ray served on the Lamoni City Council, and was the Business Manager and Treasurer of Graceland College for 10 years. Ray edited the Jackson County Farm Bureau News for 12 years.

Ray died on February 18, 1978, Kansas City, Missouri. Lula Grace (Porter) Carmicheal was born February 19, 1895, Anamosa, Iowa, and died May 29, 1983, Lee's Summitt, Missouri. They were interred at Mound Grove Cemetery, Independence, Missouri.
