Decatur County Journal
Leon, Decatur County, Iowa
DIED – December 6th, 1893. Mr. S. J. CALHOUN, aged 58 years, 11 months and 1 day. Mr. Calhoun was born in Westmoreland county, Pa. His early life was spent under the ministry of Dr. KIRKPATRICK, then scholarly Presbyterian clergyman under those tuition were Ex-Governor POLLOCK and CURTAIN and other civil notables of Pennsylvania. At the the age of 17. Mr. C. united with the church. After his marriage in 1857, he sought his fortune in the mighty West, as tens of thousands were doing. He was often engaged in teaching both in Iowa and in Nebraska, residing in the latter state for a number of years. He was also ordained to the office of ruling Elder in a Presbyterian church in Nebraska.
His health was impaired for years, but last summer he became a helpless invalid and the months since was only waiting for release. His sufferings were severe but born with Christian resignation. His faith and hope were strong and clear.
Mr. CALHOUN was a man of pure motives, and, an earnest and active Christian. He served as superintended of the Presbyterian Sunday school in Leon, until last summer. In his death the family lost a kind husband and father, the church a devoted member, the community an upright citizen. A faithful wife and family ministered to him in loving kindness during his illness. The funeral services were held in the Presbyterian Church. (end of Clipping)
