JAMES H. COZAD was born in Warren County, Indiana, March 25, l847, and died at his residence about 7 miles southeast of Leon, Decatur County, Iowa, June l0, l902, his age being 55 years, 2 months and l5 days. The deceased was united in marriage to MISS REBECCA STILL of Decatur County, Iowa, January l9, l87l. To them three children were born, MERIDETH S., dying in infancy, WILLIE V., and CORA A. MOORE. The deceased had been a great sufferer for about two years with lung trouble which was borne with much patience and resignation till the discharge came and entered into rest.
He leaves his wife, an aged mother, two daughters, three brothers and three sisters, together with a large circle of relatives and friends to mourn his absence, but they sorrow not as those who have no hope. Just before his departure the deceased said to his sorrowing wife, "My peace is made with God, my Father, and I am ready to go."
The funeral was held at the New Salem Church, in the presence of a large audience, services being conducted by the Rev. F. Edwards of Osceola, an old time friend. The text for the sermon was 2 Cor. 4-l7 after which the remains were laid to rest in the New Salem Cemetery just east of the church, to wait the call of the sleeping nation at the resurrection at the last day.
"Why do we mourn departing friends,
Or shake at death's alarms;
Tis but the voice that Jesus sends,
To call them to His arms."
